Day 8-to Santo Domingo de la Calzada—2 no vacancies=+5.8km—4/29/2024

From Navarrete, it was again a long hike through miles and miles of vineyards on gentle slopping hills as I made my way to Ciruena where I was planning to stay in one of the two Albergues but when I got there both were full.

It was another 5.8 km to the next town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada where there was a large Albergue I was hoping to stay in.

The Albergue Casa de la Cofradia del Santos was right in town near the church and had a wonderful bed for me in the attic with old timbers showing and all the beds were twins and not bunk beds.  Here it was a cold night though.

Since I got in after 7:30 PM, I barely had time for shower and washing clothes before lights out at 10 PM.  It was a cold night though and the showers were not real hot like all other places.

I was glad to get up in the morning and get moving to warm up.

I was helped in finding a breakfast place by Lindsey, Scotsman, who is on his way home after doing a section of a Camino. I thought I was ordering a pizza and it turned out to be Coquilles St. Jacques which was a surprise, but very tasty.

Lindsay had walked the Camino several times, by himself and with his wife as well as hiking other places. Back home, he had been the president of his climbing association in Edinburgh.

I told him back in 1963 that I had hiked the Lairg Ghru in Scotland and he was impressed.

After spending a career as a carpenter all over the United Kingdom, Lindsey is now making classic guitars, mostly using Rosewood from Indonesia since it is sustainable and easy to work with, but also occasionally cedar which is a lot more prone to damage.  It sounds like lots of work goes into the making of these fine guitars.
